The two new franchises of this edition, Rajshahi Kings and Khulna Titans will face each other in the third match of the rescheduled league. Both sides looking for a lead on the point table from their very first fixture, are expected to bring up a nail-biting battle.
Captained by Darren Sammy, the skipper of the current World T20 champion West Indies team, the Kings seem a well balanced squad combining a variety of local and international stars. In batting, Sabbir Rahman will look forward to continuing with his brilliant form from the international cricket as he will have to play the key role for his side. They have plenty of local talents in their batting line up like Mominul Haque, Nurul Hasan Shohan and Rony Talukdar. The top scorer of the last Dhaka Premier League, former national team player Rakibul Hasan may find himself vital with the bat.
Youngster Ebadat Hossain from the latest pacer hunt program will probably pair with the Pakistani speedster Mohammad Sami with ball to open for the Kings. Bangladesh’s ‘surprise package’ in the last test series against England, off-spinning all-rounder Mehedi Hasan Miraz will definitely try to prove his efficacy in shorter formats.
Mahmudullah, after racing an ordinary Barisal side to final of the previous edition, will lead a new franchise this time, Khulna Titans, in search of their first ever glory. An all-rounder, the skipper will have to play the protagonist role not only as a performer, but also with his diligent captaincy skills.
Mahmudullah will enjoy the company of his team-mate from Barisal Bulls last season, Caribbean mercenary Kevin Cooper who was the highest wicket taker of that edition and also tops the table combining all three previous editions. Alongside him, the Titans have a rich list of overseas recruits with the likes of Lendl Simmons (6th highest scorer of the last BPL), Andre Fletcher, Zunaid Khan and Nicholas Pooran.
Vital in the Comilla’s successful run last season, veteran local all-rounder Alok Kapali will feature for the Titans this time. With him, national team recruit Shuvagata Hom and Mosharrof Rubel will attempt to balance their side with both ball and bat.
Each team seemingly well composed and contender for the title, it’s time to see which side come out victorious of their very first encounter and set an impetus for the rest of the journey.
