Chittagong Vikings impressed with great team-effort as they defeated defending champions Comilla Victorians by 29 runs in the rescheduled season-opener of the AKS BPL T20 2016. After Tamim Iqbal and Shoaib Malik starring with the bat, it was Mohammad Nabi and Co who restricted the title holders to 132.
Winning the toss, Victorians skipper Mashrafe opted to bowl first considering the pitch not an easy one to bat. But Tamim Iqbal seemed comfortable enough as he brought up his 21st T20 fifty decorated with plenty of aggressive strokes off 32 balls. Following the skipper, Vikings’ Pakistani recruit Shoib Malik played a cameo of unbeaten 42 runs off 28 balls. He made a 60-runs 4th wicket partnership with Jahurul Islam who also scored 29 impressive runs off 21 balls.
Defending the modest total, Caribbean pace allrounder Dwayne Smith gave the breakthrough for the Vikings with the ball as Imrul Kayes was caught behind off the first ball of Smith’s second over. Samuels and Liton seemed solid but were dismissed to reduce their side to 46 for three. Vikings’ Afghan allrounder Mohammad Nabi then tore through the Victorians batting to set his side for a decent win claiming 4 wickets for 24 runs.
For the Victorians, debutant all-rounder Nazmul Hossain Shanto held fort at one end as he raced to his unbeaten maiden T20 fifty off 44 balls smashing 6 fours. But he could not make it for his team as five Victorians were dismissed for single-digit scores.
