‘Mustafiz still lacks match fitness’: Chief Selector

Selectors have announced the squad for the upcoming tour of India in a press conference at SBNCS in Dhaka today. Bangladesh will play only one test in Hyderabad and this is the first time in their cricket history that they will face India in a test match in their home ground. Prior to that match, they are also scheduled to play a two day practice match. Team Bangladesh will depart the country tomorrow.

Nurul Hasan Sohan has been replaced by Liton Das and Shafiul Islam also made a comeback after recovering from injury. Mustafiz is not considered by the management as well. Minhazul Abedin, the chief selector, has discussed many things to defend their selection procedure during the press conference.

About the exclusion of Mustafiz

“He has still some deficiencies in skill and fitness. In test match, a bowler has to bowl for a longer period of time and Mustafiz, yet, hasn’t achieved that kind of fitness. To attain desired skills for test cricket, he requires much time. We had included him for the second test in New Zealand since many of our players were ruled out due to injuries, but now we are preparing him for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. We are also planning to give Mustafiz a chance to play a match of BCL. He is out of field for a longer period of time and we have to observe him first. If we find him fit enough for the test cricket, then we will consider him again.”

About the inclusion of Liton Das

“We had considered Liton Das before England series and he was also included in our primary test squad. He had also some injury concerns and didn’t show enough competence to come back to the squad after recovery. But recently he has scored a double ton in BCL and as the match against India will be held in the subcontinent, so he can get a chance to prove his adequacy again for the national team.”

About the future of Sohan

“Exclusion of Sohan doesn’t mean that he’s out of our pool. Sohan is a fantastic wicket keeper but we are now focusing on our batting order as well. All batsmen struggle on Indian pitch typically and we reckon that Liton will be the best fitted in that condition instead of Sohan. And most importantly, Mushfiq is hundred percent fit now and we expect that he will be able to perform as a keeper in that test match. Sohan is unlucky actually.”

About the prospects against India

“They are obviously superior side to us but our players are also gaining experience day by day. In recent past, they have executed some brilliant performances and hopefully they will carry on the venture on Indian soil.”

About the comeback of Shafiul

“As you know, Shafiul was our first choice for the tour of New Zealand but unfortunately we had to replace him with Rubel due to injury. But now he has recovered and we considered him for the India tour.”
