The rise of Bangladesh in ICC rankings

The revolution of Bangladesh Cricket team in ODI’s is well reflected in the ICC ranking. After the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy Bangladesh rank seventh in ODIs. Bangladesh started their ICC Champions Trophy campaign from sixth position but lost the place to Pakistan who clinched the title.

Over the years Bangladesh team have improved significantly in ODIs which marked their continuous growth in this format ranking. After 2015 World Cup Bangladesh beat Pakistan, India and South Africa for the first time in a bilateral series.

Bangladesh’s unbeaten record at home ODI series came to an end last year when they lost against England by 1-2. Before that Bangladesh were unbeaten in five consecutive series. In this period Bangladesh beat Zimbabwe, Pakistan, India, South Africa and Afghanistan.

Since 2005 Bangladesh came a long way to reach the seventh spot in the ODI ranking from bottom. Bangladesh were ranked 11th until 2006 when first time they moved one spot and claimed number 10. In 2007 Bangladesh again moved one spot and remained 9th till 2010. Next year Bangladesh reached the 8th spot for the first time.

In 2012, Bangladesh lost the 8th position and again moved back to 9th spot which was unchanged till 2015. After an impressive World Cup campaign and series victory over Pakistan, India and South Africa helped Bangladesh to seal the 7th spot.

Bangladesh held on their spot in 2016 and started the 2017 from same position. Success in ODI series against Sri Lanka and victory against New Zealand in a tri-nation series earned Bangladesh 6th spot in the ranking for the first time in their history. But Pakistan claimed that place after winning the ICC Champions Trophy 2017.

Currently Bangladesh rank 7th and they have certainly quailified for ICC World Cup 2019 directly. Bangladesh have ensured they will remain in the top 8 between September 30, 2017 (last deadline for automatic qualification) .

 

In the player rankings, Shakib Al Hasan is currently number one in all formats of all-rounder rankings. Shakib also leads in both batting and bowling in Test rankings from Bangladesh. He is in the number 20 in batting and 18 in bowling respectively.

Tamim Iqbal got the reward of his consistent performance in ODIs who is now at 16th among the batsmen. Among the bowlers, ODI skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza ranks 15th.

In T20I, Sabbir Rahman is now is in the top ten among batsmen. Mustafizur Rahman is the only bowler from Bangladesh in the top 10 . He currently stands 6th in the ranking.
