Bangladesh have started the Asia Cup 2018 campaign on high with a thumping 137-run victory over Sri Lanka in the opening match of the tournament at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.
Skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza opted to bat first after winning the toss which was followed by a nightmare start for the Tigers. Lasith Malinga removed Liton Kumar Das and Shakib Al Hasan in the very first over match. Bangladesh had further setback as Tamim Iqbal had to leave the field after injured his left hand. Sri Lanka bowlers were on a roll as Mushfiqur Rahim and Mohammad Mithun had to dig deep to survive the initial threat.
After that, slowly both of them take on the bowlers and added a game-changing 131-run stand in the third wicket. Malinga again stuck in his return spell to dismiss Mithun on 63. Mahmudullah and Mosaddek Hossain got out cheaply as Bangladesh were again on trouble on 175 for 6. But Mushfiqur hold on the crease on the other side and continued the fight with lower orders till the very last over.
Bangladesh lost their ninth wicket on 229 but injured Tamim Iqbal came back to bat again as the last batsmen. He had faced only one ball that too with one hand but played a crucial role to the last wickets 32-run stand. Inspired Mushfiqur gave the perfect finishing touch and helped Bangladesh to post 261 in 49.3 overs. Mushfiqur was dismissed after scoring his career-best 144 off 150 balls. Malinga took 4 wickets for 23.
Chasing 262, Upul Tharanga gave a flying start to Sri Lanka with a quickfire 27 off 16 balls. But some disciplined bowling from the bowlers have put the pressure back on Sri Lanka who lost 4 wickets for only 38. Sri Lanka were never in the chase, losing wickets in regular interval and were eventually all out for 124 in 35.2 overs. Mustafizur, Mehidy and Mashrafe shared two wickets each..
Mushfiqur Rahim was named the player of the match for his match-winning knock.
Bangladesh will face Afghanistan in the last group match on September 20.
