Bangladesh suffered batting collapse on the third day as Sri Lanka further strengthened their grip on the second Test. At stumps of day 3, the hosts lead by 259 runs after Bangladesh were all out for 251.

Sri Lanka batted for couple of overs in the morning before declaring their innings on 493 for 7. Taskin picked up the wicket of Ramesh 33 before Dickvella scored some quick runs and remained unbeaten on 77. Taskin grabbed his career best 4 wickets for 127 in Tests.

Tamim started form where he left in the first Test as he carried the good form and kept the scorecard running. Saif Hassan batted with patience as the pair gave Bangladesh the ideal start with a 98-run partnership. Just before the lunch, Saif and first Test centurion Najmul Hossain both got out as Sri Lanka made their way back in the match.

Tamim was the next batsmen to be dismissed after scoring a counter-attacking 92. Then Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim added 63 runs and looked good before debutant Jayawickrama trapped Mushfiqur lbw on 40 in the last over of second session. Following the tea break, Tigers lost their last 6 wickets for 27 runs as Jayawickrama claimed 6 wickets for 92.

Despite the 242 runs lead, Sri Lanka decided to bat again. Mominul started with spinners from both ends and they responded with wickets. Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan scalped 1 wicket each. Sri Lanka scored 2 for 17 before end of play. Karunaratne was not out on 13 and Mathews was on 1.
