Bangladesh Thrashes Afghanistan
in Tournament Opener
ICC T20I World Cup 2014: Match 1
Bangladesh- 73/1 Anamul- 44*(34), Afghanistan- 72/10 Shakib- 3/8
Bangladesh starts off their World cup campaign with a flier as they thrashed Afghanistan and paved their way into a convincing 9 wicket victory.
Low on confidence having lost to Afghanistan in an ODI during the Asia cup, Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur chose to bowl first on winning the toss in a pitch that seemed to have plenty of purchase for both the spinners and pacers.
Bangladesh asserted pressure on Afghanistan right from the first delivery as Mashrafe Mortaza removed Mohammad Shahzad who miscued an unconventional slog that went into the hands of Mahmudullah. Gulbadin Naib and Najeeb Tarkarai tried to resurrect the innings but fell prey on succesive deliveries to Shakib Al Hasan. Wickets continued to fall from both ends as Afghanistan were left in tatters by disciplined display of bowling and fielding by Bangladesh.
Shakib Al Hasan picked up 3 wickets for just 8 runs while Abdur Razzak took 2 wickets for 20. Mahmudullah was economical with the ball having conceded only 8 runs of his 4 overs.
Afghanistan were bundled out for 72 in the 18th over. Gulbadin Naib top scored with 21 while the rest of the Afghanistan batsmen could not make a mark.
In reply, Bangladesh started cautiously. Anamul Haque stepped on the accelerator in the sixth over. He took Karim Sadiq on and belted the delivery to the boundary followed by a clean hit for six. Samiullah Shenwari caught Tamim plumb in front of the wickets in the eighth over. Shakib came to the crease and finished it off for Bangladesh along with a flambuoyant Anamul in only 12 overs.
Anamul remained not out on 44 off only 34 deliveries. His innings included 3 sixes and 4 manipulative shots to the boundary. Tamim scored 21.
Shakib Al Hasan was adjudged man of the match for his brilliant figures of 3 for 8 with the ball.
This win will do a world of good to Bangladesh as they go on to play Nepal and Hong Kong in a quest to reach the Super 10 as the group champions of group A.
Bangladesh’s next match is on the 18th of March against Nepal.
