Bangladesh lose against Sri Lanka despite Mushfiqur heroics

Bangladesh : 171/4 in 20 overs (Naim 62, Mushfiqur 57*, Liton 16; Karunaratne 1/12, Fernando 1/27, Kumara 1/29)

Sri Lanka : 172/5 in 18.5 overs (Asalanka 80*, Rajapaksa 53, Nissanka 24; Shakib 2/17, Nasum 2/29, Saifuddin 1/38)

Result : Sri Lanka won by 5 wickets.

Player of the Match : Charith Asalanka.

Bangladesh started the Super 12 of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 with disappointment as they lost the clash against Sri Lanka by 5 wickets in Sharjah. Tigers will take on England in their next match on October 27.

Defending 171, Bangladesh were well in the match at the halfway mark when they reduced Sri Lanka for 80 for 4. But since then Asalanka and Rajapakse took the charge and put on a counter attacking partnership. The pair punished the Bangladesh bowlers and added match-winning 86 run-stand.

Finally Nasum Ahmed got rid off Rajapakse on 53 but it was too late as Sri Lanka sealed the match with 7 balls in hand. Asalanka remained not out on 80 runs. Shakib claimed 2 wickets for 17.

Earlier of the day, Sri Lanka invited Bangladesh to bat first after winning the toss. Nasum came in the side in place for Taskin Ahmed from the last match.

Liton Kumar Das got the start but his innings cut short for 16 by Kumara. In form Shakib too followed him soon after scoring 10. Then Naim Sheikh and Mushfiqur Rahim set the Tigers innings with a 73-run stand. Naim was dismissed on 62 but Mushfiqur remained unbeaten till the end to ensure a big total.

Mushfiqur scored 57 off just 37 balls. Skipper Mahmudullah chipped in with unbeaten 10 as Bangladesh ended with 171 for 4 in 20 overs. Karunaratne, Fernando and Kumara shared 1 wicket each for Sri Lanka.
